A new “study” recently made the claim that since U.S. gun owners are more likely to be white, that, they claim, must mean they are all racists. Junk science. Isn’t it wonderful?
The study was released on October 31 by a “research” journal in Australia called PLOS One and is titled, “Racism, Gun Ownership and Gun Control: Biased Attitudes in U.S. Whites May Influence Policy Decisions.” The study examined whether racism is also related to gun ownership and opposition to gun controls in US whites, it was explained.
The very first red flag that the results of this study are crap is that the “racism” identified is called “symbolic racism.” This is such a nebulous definition of racism that it is ultimately meaningless.
The study claimed to have found that for every one point on its so-called “symbolic racism” scale, there was a 50 percent greater chance that respondents had a gun in their home. It then claimed that gun ownership is twice as high among whites as blacks and that whites are more likely to oppose gun control.
“This anti-black affect is not necessarily conscious or deliberate but may be felt as fear, anger, unease and hostility towards blacks,” the researchers said in their report. “The symbolic component reflects the abstract view of blacks as a collective rather than as individuals, as well as its basis in abstract white moralistic reasoning and traditions.”
Ah, so it is not deliberate? So, it mostly exists in the minds of the researchers and not in the minds of those they were attacking in their “study.”
